What is the City Digital Archive?
The City Digital Archive is a new resource
within the Libraries, Archives and Guildhall Art Gallery
Department providing access to a wealth of material available
in digital form for historical research.
It is located adjacent to Guildhall Library and is open during
the Library’s opening hours, Monday – Saturday 09:30-16:45.
Access to the computers is free & printing facilities are
available within the Library to users with either a History Card or
City of London Libraries Card
The area is self-service and any queries should be emailed to
ask.lma@cityoflondon.gov.uk.
Every email is answered by specialists experienced in guiding
people to the relevant archives or other sources of
information.
What’s on the computers?
- The archive catalogue which lists the full range of archives
held at London Metropolitan Archives, including the City’s own
archives and historical material about the Square Mile
- The City of London libraries catalogue, Talis Prism
- Free access to digital images of our major family history
sources, such as parish registers and workhouse records via the
Ancestry.co.uk website. Our digitisation programme will ensure that
many more London archives will regularly be added to the site
- Free access to other major digitised sources through Find my
Past.com
- Digital copies of our most popular maps through the “Magnifying
the Metropolis” micro-site
- Hundreds of thousands of images depicting London’s history and
topography from the 15th century using the COLLAGE image
database
- Quick links to useful family history and other research
websites such as Historical Directories, The Proceedings of the Old
Bailey, AIM25, the Federation of Family History Societies and the
Guild of One Name Studies
